Practise French online in a friendly chat: ask questions in English, try your first sentences and get help from French speakers, free and no sign-up.

#learn-french is for people learning French, whatever their level, who want somewhere friendly to ask questions in English and try out sentences. Andromede has been a French chat since 2004, so French speakers are never far away, and some of them enjoy helping. Pick a nickname and join, free and without registration.

Ask about the things textbooks explain badly: tu or vous, when to use the subjunctive, why "je suis plein" is not what you want to say after dinner, or how people really write in a text message ("slt, ça va ?"). Share the apps, podcasts, films and books that help you. Once you feel ready, try a few lines in one of the French rooms; most people are happy to slow down for a learner.

Everyone was a beginner once, so be kind to other learners. Corrections are welcome when they are gentle. If you would like longer one-to-one practice, ask in the language exchange room. Never share personal details in public, and if someone makes you uncomfortable, block them and tell the team.
