Chat in English with just a nickname

Andromede has been open to everyone since 2004. It started as a French-speaking chat, and its English rooms now bring together English speakers from all over the world, expats and travellers in France, Belgium and Switzerland, and people learning French or English. All you need is a nickname: no account, no email address and nothing to install. The chat runs in your browser, on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

Join with a nickname

Choose what people will call you and open the chat. Age, gender and city are optional: you share only what you want others to see, which makes chatting with strangers more relaxed. The beginner's guide explains the first steps.

Rooms for your country and city

Say hello in UK Chat, Ireland Chat, USA Chat, Canada Chat or Australia Chat, or drop into London, Dublin, Montreal and Paris. Living abroad? There are rooms for expats in France, Belgium and Switzerland. A room's place name is a meeting point, not a requirement: anyone can join any room.

Practise French or English

A French-born chat is a good place to practise. In Language Exchange, French speakers learning English meet English speakers learning French, and Learn French is there for questions in English. Then come and talk about music, gaming, football, films and TV or travel, or browse all topic rooms.

Friends, dating and respect

Looking for new friends? Start in Friends. For adults who would like to meet someone, there are Dating and Flirt, both for people aged 18 and over. Read the rules, respect other people's limits and choose the conversations you take part in.

New people, one conversation at a time

Pick a nickname, join the welcome room #english-chat or open a room's page. Read the topic, say hello and ask a question. You can share a song, tell people about your day or just read for a while; you do not need to know anyone to start talking.

The English-speaking community is just starting: how lively it is depends on who is online. If a room is quiet, come back later or invite a friend. We only show how many people are online when we have a recent count.

The buttons and menus of the browser chat are not translated into English yet and appear in French for now; the help page explains the main ones. Would you like to welcome newcomers or suggest a get-together? Get involved.

Your privacy and your limits matter

In public rooms people get to know each other first and then, if both want to, carry on in private messages. You can close a conversation, filter new messages and block people. Use a nickname and do not post your real name, address, phone number or anything else you want to keep to yourself.

If you create an account, your friends list is kept with it; without an account it stays on your device. Read about private messages, privacy, or write to the team if you need help.
